First shown earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show, the new two-door, four-seater, front-engined soft top joins the range alongside the Eos hard-top convertible. It is fitted as standard with an electrically-powered fabric roof which can be lowered in just 9.5 seconds including on the move at speeds up to around 18 mph. No separate roof cover is needed, contributing to the very rapid opening time, and resulting in less bootspace intrusion and meaning that even with the roof down, there is 250 litres of available space. |

| What can’t be seen from the outside are the differences that have been incorporated under the skin. In changing the hatchback to a soft-top, modifications were made to ensure that safety, comfort and refinement were not compromised in the cabriolet version. These include reinforced window frames and structural modifications to the underbody, side panels, cross-members and doors to endow the new car with an extremely high level of torsional rigidity. Also benefiting refinement is the design of the fabric roof which has an additional exterior skin, as well as new window and door seals. Order books are now open, with the first customer deliveries due to take place at the start of September. For more information please visit your Retailer. |

New features The first thing you'll notice when you drop down its fully automatic soft-top – in a swift 9.5 seconds (BMW 1 Series takes 22 seconds) – is that the 'strawberry punnet' roll-bar of previous versions is gone, giving the new model a sleek, fresh look. And with the roof down there's still a healthy 250 litres of boot space (Golf has 350 litres of boot space). Crash protection is provided by an extremely fast rollover protection system that deploys in milliseconds, a reinforced windscreen, numerous other structural modifications, and an array of airbags. With the top up, the Golf Cabriolet is one of the quietest of cabriolets. Engines The new Golf Cabriolet will be available with a choice of three engines: a 1.2-litre TSI 105 PS, 1.4-litre TSI 160 PS and a 1.6-litre TDI 105 PS. A further petrol and two diesels will be offered later in the year. DSG automatic transmission will be offered while BlueMotion Technology modifications will be applied to the diesel engines to ensure high efficiency and low emissions. Trim levels and specification New Golf Cabriolet come in three trim levels: S, SE and Sport. All models receive: -Alloy wheels |
S trim 16" 'Atlanta' alloy wheels SE trim (over and above S trim) 17" 'Porto' alloy wheels 18" 'Charleston' alloy wheels Saftey Safety has always been a Golf attribute and the Cabriolet is no different in this respect. An active rollover protection system is employed, ABS, ESP and front and side head/thorax airbags are also all standard. |
Press comments Whatcar.com: "The Golf shuns the current trend for folding metal roofs in favour of a more traditional fabric hood. Still, it's anything but old-fashioned. The roof is fully electric and folds away in less than 10 seconds. It can even be raised when you're driving at speeds of up to 19mph – useful if there's a sudden shower. The controls are beautifully weighted, and the handling is much like the hatch's: composed, grippy and safe. Refinement also impresses; you hear some wind noise from around the side windows at speed, but road- and suspension noise are always subdued. What's more with the roof down (but the side windows up and the wind deflector in place) there's little buffeting. Most of the Cabriolet's interior is lifted straight from the hatch, which means you get a simple dashboard layout and lots of classy, soft-touch plastics. There's also a huge range of seat and steering wheel adjustment to help drivers of different sizes get comfortable. It's a genuine four-seater; two adults can sit in the back without feeling cramped. On the safety front, stability control and four airbags are standard across the board, and Volkswagen has swapped the ugly fixed roll hoops of previous Golf Cabriolets for bars that pop up only if the car is about to turn over. All of this helps make the Golf a desirable drop-top."
